We don’t need no stinkin’ IE
Hopefully, by now, my handful of readers have found the joy and freedom that is Firefox and have left evil IE along side the road. Unfortunately, there are still some sites out there that want to slam the door on anyone who isn’t using IE. I had heard that this was a problem with the online version of WeightWatchers, though D reported that that site does work in Safari. I hadn’t had a problem with the IE roadblock until I tried to sign up for SELF Diet Club, a cool exercise/food log site that is free to subscribers to SELF magazine. But the site was all “You must use IE 5.0 or higher on a PC” and Safari wouldn’t work. And I while I have evil IE on my work machine, I wanted to be able to use the site at home. Then I found a fabulous Firefox extension: User Agent Switcher. It allows me to switch my user agent so that even though I’m using Firefox on my Mac (works on PC too), the offending site thinks I’m using IE 6.0 on WinXP and lets me right in. There are a few odd site functionalities that don’t work quite right in Firefox, but I can use the site, and that’s good enough for me. It gave me such geek satisfaction to get around those web programmers trying to push IE/PC on me. Heh.
