Change Wind Direction + Stop the Snowfall

In about half an hour, I’m off to see Episode III. My days of avoiding tv commericals and half the links on the internet are over. Last night I stayed up until nearly 1am watching Episode II. I don’t think I had ever watched my dvd version before. Love that Yoda light-saber scene. Loved when the crowd cheered in the theater. Hope there is at least one moment like that in the new film.

The Lucasfilms juggernaut is everywhere right now. On my way out of work yesterday, a car that was waiting to pick up someone had The Saga Begins… playing on its stereo. I had to sing along as I walked through the parking lot.

A few co-workers and I were talking about our various Star Wars memories. Since Star Wars opened when I was only a year old, I didn’t see any of the original trilogy in the theater, yet the movies have been in my mind for as long as I can remember. I must have seen them on tv/vhs first, but I have no recollection of the first time I saw them. I had copies I had taped off tv forever.

There is the distinct memory of getting in trouble at youth group and getting sent home by my mom (I lived across the street from our church.) I was most likely told to NOT watch tv. [Since I watched a lot of tv as a kid, that was a punishment I often got. A lot of good that did to curb my interest...] But I got home and realized that The Empire Strikes Back was on tv. Sunday night movie on some network. So I had to tape it. Surely my mom didn’t mean I couldn’t tape Star Wars! I remember her coming home after some meetings. She was not overly pleased that I was watching TV. But I was like, “but I’m taping it!” So she let me stay up and finish it. I always have the memory of the scene where the helmet was lowered on to Darth Vader’s scary bald pale head.

Back later with comments on the movie. What are your Star Wars memories?

Another memory… junior year of college, I was Princess Leia for Halloween. I wish I had a better picture of my hair.

I saw the original Star Wars 7 times. In the theater. Over about a months time.

My friends and I were obsessed with it, especially Luke so we went to see it every weekend. I saw the Empire Strikes Back once. And havent seen any of the others!

My brother was the big Star Wars fan. He had ALL the original action figures and vehicles. TONS of them. Everything ever made. My mother sold them at a yard sale. (along with my complete set of 1973 baseball cards which had Mike Schmidts rookie card in it, but thats another story)

My brother also has a beautiful Star Wars sweater (size 4T) that someone knit for him, and an R2D2 ceramic nightlight that my grandmother made for him.
