I was trying to think of a better title for this post, but everytime I saw the news scroll on KWWL the past two days about this topics, that’s all I could think.
From KWWL regarding the Pierre Pierce case, who is being sentenced today for
third-degree burglary, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, false imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
Here’s the title-inspiring part:
Pierce’s attorneys asked that he receive a suspended sentence for the burglary charge and a deferred judgment on the other charges. If given deferred judgments, Pierce would be placed on probation. The charges would be erased from his record if he successfully completes probation. Defense attorneys say Pierce is trying to turn his life around, and his chance to play pro basketball justifies him not going to prison.
Disgusting.

I wonder how often this sort of consideration is made. That is, I wonder if people can avoid jail time for violent crime because they may go on to law school or because they have a lucrative VP-level job in business? Or because they have a chance to be an exceptional teacher or college professor? Somehow I doubt it…

You think those teachers who get arrested for having sex with their students can try that defense?
“Your honor, going to prison will take away my opportunity to be an educator and the students will be losing an excellent teacher”
