Adventures in Customer Service

I know I haven’t posted forever and I have to do a big catch up post for my own sanity, as per usual. But until I get that finished, I’ve decided to post other things.

Today I had three encounters with people in the service industry, with varying degrees of success.

I had ordered a new pair of winter/snow boots (YA! Snow!) from Lands End. They arrived yesterday as the snow was tapering off. Unfortunately, they did not fit. I’m beginning to wonder if manufacturers are starting to vanity size shoes too. I used to be an 8 1/2, then I was a solid 8 forever, but now I’m buying 7 1/2s. What’s up with that? How can my feet be shrinking while the rest of me is expanding? I had ordered an 8, but they were too big. This morning I called the Lands End customer service. I got an actual real human person on the second ring. No on hold time, no “this call may be monitored for blah blah blah” recorded message first. I was so shocked when this woman was just right there sounding delighted to be speaking to me (good actress). She quickly informed me that any Sears store that sold clothing would take my boots back and she helped me order a new pair that I should get early next week (and free shipping to boot). My original pair were red, which I only got for kicks. They didn’t have red in the smaller size, which was fine, and I got black because I realized that red boots + my yellow winter coat = Iowa State and, well, ew. My phone call took all of five minutes.

Over lunch I went to the mall to return my boots to Sears. I had to wait for 15 minutes to complete my return. There were a bunch of us just standing there with this totally overwhelmed cashier who couldn’t do anything without supervisor help. It was ridiculous. The place was practically empty, but they couldn’t handle four people at the checkout counter. Once I finally got waited on, it only took a minute if that. I was so irritated. Then I went to Target to get a new white board. Everyone and their mother was at the mall. I don’t get why. Did we have a snow day in Iowa City? I can’t imagine why we would’ve. The snow stopped early last night, the roads were fine this morning and its bright and sunny out. Regardless, it was a madhouse. This is one of the reasons I moved. Too many people scurrying around like ants.

Those two things took so long that I didn’t have time to get the lunch at Panera that I had planned on. So I was bad and just went to the McDonald’s drive thru. Best. Service. Ever. 12:15pm on a Friday and I was only the third car in line. Placed my order, paid with my debt card, and had my food in the car, driving away in under a minute. Seriously! I think my mouth was agape at the guy in the drive thru window when I pulled up and my bag was right there. Even the fries were hot.
